Funky fashion business fundraises for charities at home and abroad

London Met student looks to help street children in Ghana through her enterprise.

Date: 19 December 2014

Sonia Meggie, a part-time Digital Media Master's student at London Met, has started her own business with the help of the University’s business incubator, Accelerator

FunkyNChunky, an accessories enterprise that sells African print bags and statement jewellery, sells bags from Ghana, made in partnership with women who are based there.

A percentage of the profits will go towards a school in Ghana that supports girls on the streets and a new Saturday school based in Clapham, South West London.

Supportive and Informative

Sonia finds her tutors at London Met, “very supportive and informative,” she said.

“I had a tutor who was very passionate about her sector and was determined to see all students succeed. The course is also very interactive and allows you to learn at your own pace.”

During her time at London Met, Sonia has been able to benefit from the Accelerator and their Hatchery programme, which helped her launch her own business.

“I have been able to learn from the three coordinators Toby, Ellie and Simon, who are enthusiastic and passionate about seeing all participants grow their start up”, she said.

“I am also able to meet and learn from other students and graduates who are at a similar stage with their business.

“We have listened to some incredible speakers and met former tech start-ups who are now worth over $10 billion. This has been so useful, as we have gained practical insights and contacts.”

Set to finish her studies next summer, Sonia works part time as a Diversity Advisor and also runs her Social Enterprise, Inspirational YOU.

Commenting on her success, she encourages students to “just go for it and believe in your brand.”

Be your own boss

The Hatchery at London Met’s Accelerator is based in the heart of Shoreditch, and supports those who want to turn a business idea into a reality.

The programme includes weekly sessions and workshops, access to office space and computers, mentorship, social events, and a chance to be part of a thriving community of enterprises on the doorstep of London’s Tech City.
