London Met rises to the Challenge!

London Met’s team has provided an antidote to Jeremy Paxman’s cynicism becoming the highest achieving post-92 university in the history of BBC2’s University Challenge.

Having beaten St John’s college, Oxford by a convincing 235 to 175 points in the first round, the four students went on to beat the University of Durham in a closely contested 150 to 140 match. Things really started hotting up when the London Met team played Jesus college, Cambridge in a thrilling quarter-final clash aired on 22 March; and then held their nerve to beat the opposition by just 15 points.

In the semi-final on 5 April our team faced Gonville and Caius college, Cambridge. We sadly lost this match, but not before putting up a determined fight, and reaching the highly respectable score of 190 points to the opposition’s 220.

The University Challenge team before their first round matchThe team, which comprised of Andy Horton (team captain), Nick Grundy, Jonathan Dawid, Anthony McDonnell and David Greenfield as reserve, had already fended off opposition from over 200 universities to reach the televised stages.

Having a strong variety of knowledge is essential to get far on University Challenge, and the team are studying a wide range of subjects at the University. Andy is completing his second MA in information services management, Nick is studying for a conversion diploma in psychology, Jonathan is studying for a CPE in law, Anthony is looking to add a certificate in Irish studies to his humanities BA, and David completes the team studying for his BA in politics, philosophy and economics.

Congratulations to everyone in the team. The students union is putting together a team for the next year, so we look forward to the new series with anticipation.
