New Student Council Chair elected

London Metropolitan University Law student and accomplished youth and human rights advocate, Temidayo Israel-Abdulai (pictured right), has been elected as the new Chair of the University’s Student Council. Temidayo is the first African student to become Chair of the Student Council since the University’s inception in 2002.

The Student Council is the highest student representative body in the University and is responsible for the policies of the Student Union. The Council is made up of student academic representatives, club and society leaders, as well as elected Student Union representatives.

Temidayo, who was recently invited to Buckingham Palace to attend a reception with the Queen, visited the Republic of Portugal earlier this month as an official delegate to the Africa-EU Heads of Government Meeting, Youth Forum.

The Africa-Europe Youth Summit took place in Lisbon from the 5-7 December and ran parallel to the main session. Temidayo was among 200 youth representatives from Europe and Africa who met to discuss fostering further relationships between Africa and Europe, with an audience of 60 observers, including government representatives, regional and international organizations, and members of the media.

The Summit was held under the patronage of H.E Mr Anibal Cavaco Silva, President of the Republic of Portugal (pictured left). It was organised by the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe in partnership with the Portugese Youth Council, the European Youth Forum, the Pan African Youth Union and other national and international youth organisations.

Temidayo spoke about his recent successes: ‘I am excited about both opportunities as it gives me a chance to further represent the voice of students and young Africans in Diaspora.’

He added: ‘I hope my post as Chair of the Student Council will enhance the voice of African students at the University and mark a new beginning of student leadership at London Met.’
