Industry scouts talent at 2007 Digital Media show
Representatives from some of the UK’s biggest and most well-known
digital media companies and recruitment agencies were blown away by the
talent and skills on display at Digital Escape 2007, the Department of
Computing, Communications Technology and Mathematics (CCTM) end-of-year
show, with a number of students offered work on the spot by impressed
industry scouts.
Among the companies who attended Digital Escape 2007, which was held on 8 and 9 June at the Graduate Centre, were BSkyB, 2Simple Software, Playgen, Digital White, Ymogen, Genius-telecom, Red&Blue Productions, Datascope and Purple Consultancy.
Industry reps visited the exhibition on 8 June during the official launch party, which saw more than 150 people enjoy an action-packed evening of computer games, animations, short films, websites, show reels, and much more over two levels of the Daniel Libeskind-designed building on Holloway Road.
It was the first time students on the new BSc Visualisation and Games,
BSc Multimedia Technology and Applications, BSc Multimedia and BSc
Animation degrees had exhibited their work to the public.
According to organiser Fiona French, the event was a great success, with queues of players waiting to try out ‘Blow Up Pirates’, a multiplayer XBox game developed by students from BSc Computer Visualisation and Games, while other visitors enjoyed a mini-cinema showing work produced by BSc Animation students.
'Students from the various multimedia degrees worked hard in the weeks prior to the event, planning the venue and inviting guests,' Fiona said. 'Special credit should go to students Sophie Shaw and Ben Shaw, who led the team in decoration, producing posters and life-size cardboard models of 3D characters, as well as Franklin de Sousa and Ilona Filipenkova, who developed the show website. Trisha Kelly also helped by co-ordinating groups of students from City and North campuses.'
Ilona commented: 'The show was a great opportunity to see other
peoples' work and the website that stores all the information about
other students with a link to their portfolio was really a great idea.
What I most enjoyed was the preparations for the show.'
Fiona also wanted to commend the London Met student ambassadors, who she said did a great job during the event, as well as Technical and Building Services staff who provided faultless and cheerful support all week, setting up computers and maintaining security in the building.
