Woolfcubs swing by cable
Hanging from a steel cable 1,300 feet above ground in a remote Colombian village is all in a day’s work for London Met CASS graduate Jesse Quinones.
Jesse is one third of the award-winning production company Woolfcub Productions, which he founded with brother Daniel Quinones, also a London Met graduate. Both brothers studied Film Production at The Cass.
Jesse spent part of last year in Los Piños, an area 40 miles from the Colombian capital Bogota, to film his latest documentary, The Cable.
For the handful of families living in Los Piños, 12 steel cables which connect one side of the valley to the other are their only access to the outside world. The Cable tells the moving story of three children who use the cable and the inspiring ways in which they overcome such an obstacle day after day.
Woolfcub said the Colombian Government has ‘refused to build a bridge due to the small population in the area so the cables are still the only transport available to those living in the area’.
While filming the documentary, Jesse tried out the cable himself. ‘I clung onto it ... to see what it felt like, by wrapping my legs and arms around it’, he said.
‘I got tired after about five seconds. My hands nearly started to bleed from rubbing against the uncompromising tough skin of the thick chord.’
Jesse’s blog reveals the remarkable experiences the team had while filming The Cable - like the day police told his team to clear off because a group of 150 rebels were on the other side of the mountain planning an attack! Luckily no violence took place.
Above all, Jesse wrote of how touched the film crew was by the hospitality of the community. He wrote: ‘It was a real community effort, this film. From Nestor zipping across (the cable) six or seven times in one day so that we got all the angles we needed, to Nelly providing us with snacks throughout the days to keep us going ... The community really pulls together. They are a family.’
Woolfcub are making a 30 minute version of the film for the Community Channel and have had interest from the BBC and National Geographic. So watch out for The Cable in 2011!
