Tango for Export: Argentine Emigrants and the Globalisation of Dance

The growing popularity of the tango in recent years has been accompanied by a global demand for Argentine tango artists. The promotion and practice of Argentine tango has captured a loyal audience eager to learn from those who embody the know-how of the tango’s technical and emotional reservoir.

Anahi Viladrich, Associate Professor at Hunter College, City University of New York and Director of the Immigration and Health Initiative (IAHI) is to present 'Tango for Export: Argentine Emigrants and the Globalisation of Dance' at London Metropolitan University.

The presentation will show how the dominance of the Argentine style on the ballroom floor (with all its variations) has helped place Argentine artists in the spotlight. The construction of global tango passion will be further examined from the point of view of a growing number of Argentine artists, for whom the tango has become a legitimate passport to leave their country in search for better opportunities abroad.

The event has been organised with the support of the Health and Media strands and the Department of Humanities, Arts, Languages and Education at London Met.
