Graduate Centre

London North campus
166-220 Holloway Road
London N7 8DB

The new Graduate Centre has been built on the London North campus directly on the Holloway Road. The building liberates modern university architecture from its redbrick, tower block image, away from a tradition of functionality over form.

The building is one of the most exciting new developments in London, and was designed by the internationally renowned architect, Daniel Libeskind, whose portfolio includes the Jewish Museum in Berlin, and the redevelopment of the World Trade Centre site in New York. Daniel Libeskind was also the architect for the Imperial War Museum North, Manchester.

Explaining the inspiration behind his design for the Graduate Centre on his official website, Libeskind stated the purpose behind his design: "The building is composed of three intersecting volumes with a distinctive presence on the street and unique interior spaces. The building is clad entirely with embossed stainless steel panels creating a shining and ever-changing surface. Windows are conceived as large geometrical cuts providing accentuated natural light for the interior. The spaces are simple, bold volumes which provide multi-purpose flexibility."

Facilities at the Graduate Centre include a state of the art lecture theatre, three seminar rooms, IT facilities and a social space. It provides the University with an excellent resource for attracting postgraduate students and research students.

After winning a RIBA prize in 2004, the Graduate Centre has now been awarded a special prize in the Royal Fine Art Commission Trust's Building of the Year Awards; the Jeu d'Esprit award was received at The Savoy hotel, London on 16 June 2005.
