Child protection set textbook by London Met lecturer flying off the shelves

Proactive Child Protection and Social Work second edition published.

Co-authored by London Met lecturer Dr Liz Davies (Emeritus Reader in Child Protection) and Nora Duckett, Senior Lecturer in Social Work at Anglia Ruskin University, Proactive Child Protection and Social Work is a complete rewrite of a key social work text used by over 100 UK universities and has already sold over 300 copies prior to publication.

In this new edition, the authors offer a strengthened children's rights perspective and explore four main categories of child abuse – emotional abuse, sexual abuse, neglect and physical abuse. The book also considers legal safeguards and protective processes to increase the creativity and confidence of those working to protect children. Locating knowledge and skills within a series of case examples from real-life practice and serious case reviews, this book is an indispensable resource for students and professionals.

This second edition has been comprehensively updated to include current research evidence and a focus on the neglected protection needs of sexually exploited young people, children in custody, disabled children, young carers and unaccompanied child migrants. Phil Frampton, care leaver, author and co-orindator of the WhiteFlowers survivor campaign writes in the foreword that "amid the changed and changing political context, which is having such a significant impact on children’s present and future circumstances, social workers need courage and integrity to fight for social justice for children and to do so they need to be informed by sound evidence as this book provides". Frampton, who has contributed substantially to social work courses at this University since 2004, is to be awarded an Honorary Doctorate by London Metropolitan University this summer.

The book is dedicated to Helen Mitchell, social worker and whistleblower, who died in 2014.

Proactive Child Protection and Social Work (2nd Edition, London, published by Sage) is now available in hardback, paperback and in kindle format, available from Amazon and other sellers, and is also being marketed internationally.
