EFFECTS

A framework for professional development

EFFECTS project logo

EFFECTS, The Effective Framework for Embedding C&IT Using Targeted Support, was a three-year TLTP Phase 3 funded project involving five institutions: UMIST, UNL (now part of LondonMet), Oxford Brookes, Plymouth and Southampton.

The EFFECTS project began in 1998, to support academic and learning support staff in applying learning technologies. As a well-known, nationally funded project, it has led to the implementation of institutionally accredited M-level professional development modules in seven UK HEIs. These modules follow a variety of formats, from a series of short, intensive face-to-face workshops to year-long development programmes with tailored support.

The Applying Learning Technologies module - located within the University's MA Learning and Teaching framework - uses as its starting point the EFFECTS generic learning outcomes. These address an iterative 'action research' learning cycle, ensuring successful participants analyse learning activities and redesign them using learning technology where appropriate. This 20 credits M-level module runs over one semester, and participants are expected to redesign a module to embed an element of learning technology.

An important element of the project is the emphasis placed on evaluation and dissemination. This ensures that learning technology interventions are suitable for student learning needs and goals, and that best practice is communicated to the widest possible audience. Participants are expected to continue the process of reflection, evaluation and improvement in response to student feedback.

The project's lead site (Plymouth) has taken this framework forward for national recognition with SEDA under their Professional Development framework, whilst LondonMet played an important part in developing the project's internal evaluation.

At UNL we also investigated accessibility issues surrounding learning technologies in order to highlight good practice for programme participants at the earliest opportunity. Online accessibility guidelines
