brief biography
Stephen has spent more than thirty years involved with sport at every level, from high school to voluntary organisation to national and international sports governing body. He holds a teaching certificate in physical education from the University of London and a bachelor’s and master’s degree in recreation management from the University of Oregon.
He has worked in Britain, Australia, the USA, Canada and Ireland and visited more than forty other countries during the twenty three years in which he was chief executive of Canadian Rugby, English Hockey, and the International Rugby Board, where he had overall responsibility for Rugby World Cup and the sport’s other major global events and tournaments. Stephen also founded and ran two sports consulting agencies, in Toronto and London, where he acted as lead consultant to business and sporting clients. He led many commercial research projects in this capacity.
Stephen joined the University in 2009 as a senior lecturer and course leader for the MA Sport Management and for the unique Dual MSc in International Sports Management run in conjunction with the State University of New York at Cortland. The MA Sport Management has grown to become one of the larger Masters courses in the Business School and in 2011 was the 16th most popular PG course in the University. Stephen is currently taking the MA in Learning & Teaching in Higher Education at London Metropolitan University and is a PhD candidate in Sport Management at the German Sport University’s Institute of Sport Economics and Sport Management in Cologne, where he is also a visiting professor.
