It is well documented that there is a skills gap in the UK in
the areas of management and leadership. This gap results in the
underperformance of UK organisations on the international stage. The
Management Strategy & leadership subject group exists to narrow
that gap, offering both under graduate and postgraduate students the
opportunity to explore models, theories and concepts of management and
leadership and so understand how they may be used to promote the
effectiveness of individuals in organisations. The role of leadership
in organisations is seen as a key driver to achieving organisational
innovation and change.
Managers today require a broad range of skills and capabilities, and
the ability to operate effectively in a rapidly changing and
increasingly global business environment. This programme is designed to
specifically develop the knowledge and skills essential for a career in
management and includes a year long work placement to help you develop
your experience in the work place and boost your career prospects.
All businesses exist within a local, national or even global economic
environment. A knowledge and understanding of economics and strategy
helps you to better understand and predict your market and fluctuations
within it, enabling you to make more informed decisions. Larger
organisations, and not only financial institutions, may, wittingly or
not, influence the economy of a region, a country or even the world.
With a true understanding of economics and strategy this will usually
be for the better, but badly exercised it can be disastrous. Larger
companies, as well as financial and government agencies, often employ
economists to maintain the sustainability of businesses and the
countries in which they operate.
