Aims of the course

The fundamental aim of the Graduate Diploma in Economics is to facilitate progression to postgraduate study in the area of economics, finance and related disciplines by allowing graduates in non-economics disciplines to convert their knowledge and skills to those expected of an Honours graduate in economics.

The course also enables holders of those with non-UK economics degrees (that are not considered equivalent to UK degree standards) to upgrade their degrees to the level expected of a UK Honours economics graduate and so facilitate postgraduate study.

Those with third-class UK economics degrees can also upgrade their skills. If you do not have a degree, but have professional qualifications and/or experience at an appropriate level, then this course is also suitable.

Entry requirements

Our minimum entry requirements are:

• a lower second-class Honours degree or higher in a non-economics subject; or
• an economics degree from a non-UK higher education institution that is not considered to be equivalent to an UK Honours degree; or
• a third class Honours degree in economics from a UK higher education institution or equivalent.

Applicants who do not hold a degree in any subject but who have professional qualifications and/or experiences at an appropriate level may also be considered.

+ You must demonstrate sufficient background knowledge in finance to take this module.

Assessment

Assessment is through a combination of coursework, exam and oral presentation.

Career opportunities

The course is specifically designed to enable you to pursue postgraduate studies in the area of economics, finance and related disciplines. Those who pass the course to the required standard (achieving a grade point average of 50% or above) will be entitled to admission to an appropriate course on the department's postgraduate programme.
