IISC invites star Mirtha Ibarra to Cine Cuba Film Festival

Thursday 10 July- Thursday 17 July 2008

The Barbican Centre in the City of London is to host a festival of Cuban films
from July 10-17, 2008.
The IISC has helped with the preparation of the season and has invited the Cuban film actress Mirtha Ibarra to take part in the event.
Mirtha will introduce films by her late husband Tomás Guttiérez Alea, one of which, Una Pelea Cubana Contra Los Demonios, is being especially restored to be shown in the UK for the first time.
Una Pelea is being restored with the help of Roehampton University and the Unreal project. It will be shown on July 13th on a special day of screenings from Cuba's endangered archives.
The day will mark the launch of an appeal to raise funds to save more of the original films that are in sore need of repair.
More details are in the programme on our website

cccc IISC launches the International Journal of Cuban Studies ccc

The IISC launched the first edition of its International Journal of Cuban Studies in June. It is now available to read free and online at www.cubastudiesjournal.org
In the words of the journal’s founding executive editor, Professor Patrick Pietroni:
“Our central question is to ask what the lessons are that Western and other societies can learn from interrogating and analysing the Cuban social experience?
The International Journal of Cuban Studies is one of the academic vehicles through which this open analysis and discussion will occur.”
The first issue contains articles on Cuba cultural politics, health care, education, south-south cooperation and US policy towards the island. In addition, there is a section on Cuban science and society, along with book and film reviews, and other reports of interest.
A regular feature will be a ‘classic paper’ in each edition. The first is a chapter on Cuba by Winston Churchill, describing his visit when he was a young soldier during Cuba’s Second War of Independence at the end of the 19th Century.
