Gilbert and George

Doctor of Philosophy 2008

Internationally acclaimed artists Gilbert and George began creating art together at St Martins School of Art. They believe that everything is a potential subject matter for their art and they have always addressed social issues, taboos and artistic conventions. They have had exhibitions at The Venice Biennale (2005), Turner Prize (1984) and Carnegie International (1985) to name a few.

James Moir

Doctor of Philosophy 2008

English comedian James Moir is better known by his stage name Vic Reeves. An alumnus of the Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design his drawings and paintings, which have been exhibited at Whitechapel Art Gallery, have been used in television shows and also form a major part of his 1999 book Sun Boiled Onions. James has created innovative, influential and popular work for television, radio and live performance for more than 20 years.

Tracey Emin

Doctor of Philosphy 2007

One of the art scene’s most celebrated ‘Young British Artists,’ Tracey Emin uses her life experiences as inspiration for her work. Using her personal experiences as inspiration she works in a number of mediums ranging from painting, drawing, video and installation, to photography, needlework and sculpture. Ms Emin has exhibited internationally both in solo and group exhibitions in Holland, Germany, Japan, Australia and America. In 1999 she was short listed for the Turner Prize at the Tate Gallery, London and in June 2007 she was made a Royal Academician and represented Britain at the 52nd Venice Biennale, becoming the second female artist to do so.

Professor Tetsuya Noda

Doctor of Letters 2006

One of the world's most eminent print makers and contemporary artists, Professor Noda's work has been shown all over the world and is currently on display at more than twenty galleries around the world including the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the British Museum. He continues to teach and inspire students at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, and works collaboratively with London Met's Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design.
