S & J Day time, Part-time Skills Courses

Courses take place one day a week over 10 weeks, running over Autumn, Spring, and Summer terms. This initiative replaces City & Guilds. Cost per course £405.

Course Aims and Benefits
The aim of these courses is to enable both aspiring and existing makers to develop their work through a flexible workshop programme. This can addres specific skills such as Setting or can take a more general approach to subject area. These practical 'hand-on' workshops will enhance your making skills and will assist in developing existing studio practice.

Silversmithing: Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced

The Silversmithing day course is for beginner, intermediate and advanced students. This is a practical hands-on workshop with emphasis on making skills.

For the beginner students, a wide range of basic skills will be covered on this course by making something small; a bowl or a spoon.

For the more advance students, self generated projects are encouraged with the emphasis being on gathering knowledge of techniques with a 'have a go' approach and gaining an insight into a wide range of silversmithing skills under the guidance of a master craftsman.

A variety of basic tools may be required for this course. Some tools will be available but it would be advisable to purchase some or all of the following:

Piercing Saw Frame
Piercing Saw Blades (3.0)
Files of varying sizes
Scriber
Hammers (consult with Steve on first day before purchase)
Silver if required (base metals provided)
Emery paper

Jewellery for Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced
Tutor: Adrian Lawrence

Duration 7 weeks (Wednesdays), 10.00 - 17.00

You will cover a variety of techniques for hand working in metal in a ceative environment where there will be a range of abilities and skills levels. At the end of the course students will have been able to realise their own designs and have gained skills appropriate to their abilities whether they are in the early stages of learning or have had previous experience. This is a terrific opportunity to combine creativity and hand skills.
Tools and equipment will be supplied and students are encouraged to begin building their own collection of hand tools. Precious metals are not supplied but advice and suppliers provided.
Students are advised to bring the following small tools, some tools will be available on the course:

Piercing saw and blades (3.0)
Scribe
Hammer (Consult tutor before purchase)
Pliers:
Snipe nosed
Flat flat nosed
Round flat nosed
Half round flat nosed
Metal tweezers (for soldering)

Course Structure

The courses run in blocks of 10 weeks and are designed to give participants the skills necessary to allow students to create their own pieces. There are four different courses available, over three terms during the year for maximun flexibility and ease og progression.

Class sizes are small and since we only accept a limited number of applicants, we strongly recommend early application.

For the summer our range of Masterclasses builds on the Sir John Cass tradition of encouraging and nurturing talent through mentoring and teaching by masters in the field of Silversmithing and Jewellery. Each master teaches their own specialist subject in a series of courses designed to enhance the learning experience for students already proficient in basic skills.

Alongside the Masterclasses there are classes for beginners and intermediate students wanting to learn and build on their craft skills perhaps as a continuation of the evening and day classes running through term time.
