Registering for Modules

A full time programme of undergraduate study at London Metropolitan University usually consists of 4 modules per semester worth 15 credits each. One module is worth 3 US credits or 7.5 ECTS so you will complete 12 US or 30 ECTS credits overall.

There are very few restrictions on the type of module that you can choose, but you must ensure that your home institution grants approval for any classes you select. Please read the all the information below carefully when making your choices.

Special Cases and Restricted Modules

We are pleased to offer two London based modules run specifically for Study Abroad Students. These are aimed at enriching your experience of London but are assessed and you will receive standard academic credit. Please click here for more information.

Study Abroad students can take Open Language modules as part of their programme and we offer a range of languages at different levels.

We also offer Internships to American students. Please note that there is a fee associated with taking an internship, and that you will require a visa to work in the UK (more info).

The following departments or courses are subject to restrictions and may not be available to Study Abroad students:

  • Graphic design and fine art modules are only open to full time design/art students, unless a portfolio is submitted and approved.
  • Performing arts modules are available but applications will be considered by the department on a case by case basis and may require an audition
  • Architecture modules are not available to Study Abroad students
  • Science, maths and computing modules will usually involve an exam during our exam period so are only appropriate for students who will attend for a full year or for the Spring semester until the end of May.
  • Practical social work and video editing modules are not open to Study Abroad students
  • Aviation modules are not available to Study Abroad students
  • Modules with codes in this format: ***X** or this format ***F** are pre-bachelors and not appropriate for Study Abroad students

More information on all of the above can be found on our Frequently Asked Questions Page.

How to plan your Programme of Study

1.

Browse the Module Summary List.
- see what kind of modules are available
- identify classes which interest you

2.

Use the links in the summary list to access the University's module catalogue/'how to' factsheet and see detailed class information:

  • Teaching location; it is generally easier to choose modules at the same campus (North or City)
  • Teaching semester; make sure the module is taught during the semester for which you are applying (Autumn or Spring)
  • Prerequisites; please click here for more information about prerequisites and study levels
  • Timeslot; make sure you do not have two or more modules running at the same time (morning/afternoon/evening). Click on the word North or City to see the time the module should be running and that is definitely offered this year
  • Module summary; check that the material to be covered is interesting/appropriate to you, and find information about methods of assessment and teaching hours

3.

Plan your schedule using the timeslots given in the catalogue. You should not take modules at different campuses in adjacent timeslots. If more than one timeslot is listed for a course, you only have to attend one slot

4.

Discuss your proposed programme with your adviser.
You should get 4 first choice modules, and at least 4 alternative modules approved

5.

Enter your module choices on the Module Registration Form (MRF). We need to have the following information:

  • Course code e.g. HH1001
  • Campus code N or C
  • Course title e.g. Europe since 1789
  • Day and time e.g. Mon AM (morning)

6.

Send the MRF to the Study Abroad Office by

  • 1 July for Autumn semester
  • 1 December for Spring semester

Please keep a copy for your records. You need to have a copy to refer to if we need to query modules, or to send again if your form goes missing in the post.

What happens next?

When we receive your MRF we will check the programme you have planned. If there is a problem we will email you, so please make sure that you clearly write your email address in the space provided on the form. We will also contact you if we do not receive a MRF from you in good time.

Otherwise, we will pre-register you for classes before you arrive. You will be given a schedule in orientation week, and have the opportunity to make last minute changes in your first week of classes.

Still have questions?

If you still have questions about specific classes or how to complete your MRF, please check our list of Frequently Asked Questions. If you can't find the answer there, please email us at studyabroad@londonmet.ac.uk and we will do our best to help.
