    1. What is a module?

A module is one class from a degree course (see UG course structures here), usually worth 15 London Metropolitan University credits or 7.5 ECTS credits.  They usually transfer as 3 US credits.  Some modules are 'double' and worth 30 credits.

    2. How many modules can I take?

To maintain full time status you need to take 4 modules worth 15 credits each.  You cannot take more that 60 credits worth of modules.

    3. How do I know whether the class I want to take is running?

You can look up the timeslot for each class in the module catalogue. Find the module either using the summary list or by searching the catalogue then locate the place on the page which says Timeslot. Click on the links to North and City to see whether the class is running and at what time. Always look at both links to see the most accurate information, the top page may not say the right campus or semester.

    4. Can I take classes at both campuses?

Yes. We advise that you do not take classes on different campuses in adjacent timeslots e.g. morning at City and afternoon at North as there may not be time to travel between the two classes.
The classes which you want to take may dictate which campus you study at as they may only run at one campus. If, however, a module is offered at both campuses then you can choose where to study to get the best fit with your other classes.

    5. Can I take classes that are not listed on the Summary but are running during the semester I am in London?

You may be able to. The Summary is correct when it is compiled but modules on offer may change before term starts. In some subject areas there are restrictions on who can take the modules, as addressed below.
If you want to take a module from outside the summary list and the information below doesn't help, please email us at studyabroad@londonmet.ac.uk to ask whether it is possible. Please do check first that it is definitely running by looking at the timeslot (see FAQ 1.) in the module catalogue.

    6. Can I take a Language module?

Yes you can. Study Abroad students can take a module from the Open Language Programme which offers the following languages

      Arabic

      Italian

      Business English

      Japanese

      French

      Mandarin Chinese

      General English

      Spanish

If you wish to register for a language class then please list it on your MRF. During orientation week we will take you to enrol for the Open Language Programme, you will have a chat to one of the language teachers and they will assign you to a class at the appropriate level. Most language classes run in the evening so fit in well with other classes.

    7. Can I do an Internship?

    8. Can I take a Graphic Design (DE) or Fine Art (FA) module?

If you would like to register for Fine Art or Graphic Design classes during your study abroad semester at the University, you will need to get permission from your academic advisor and meet all the necessary prerequisites for the class as usual. You may also be required to submit a portfolio of your most recent and relevant work.

Digital portfolios are preferred as these are easiest to submit for approval. You can either send a link to a website, email files or send a CD/DVD.

For each portfolio you submit, please include a brief note stating the courses you wish to take and the course codes.

Once your portfolio has been received, it will be forwarded onto the appropriate lecturer at London Metropolitan University and you will be contacted to confirm whether or not the classes have been approved.

We recommend students put non art/graphic design courses on their list of alternates in case the class is not suitable.

    9. Can I take a Performing Arts (AP) module?

It may be possible. These modules are very restricted due to limited resources but, if you have an academic background in performing arts, then we will contact the course leader and enquire as to whether you can take specific modules. This will always be assessed on a case by case basis so please email at studyabroad@londonmet.ac.uk to register your interest.

    10. Can I take an Archictecture (AD) module?

No, sorry, these are only available to full degree students.

    11. Can I take a Maths (MA) or Computing module?

Yes, in theory. However, these subjects are very hard to assess by any other format except exams and so students need to be able to stay for the exam period. For this reason. we would usually expect students of these disciplines to attend the University in the Spring semester when it is possible for you to stay for the exams. Exceptions are possible so please feel free to email with questions.

    12. Can I take a Social Work (SW) module?

Practical modules (based on placements) are not available to Study Abroad students, due to the rigorous police checks which are necessary before undertaking placements.

    13. Can I take a (Video) Editing JCAMD module?

No, sorry. These are only open to full degree students due to limited facilities.

    14. Can I take an Human Sciences Module?

It depends.  All modules require a thorough Biology and Chemistry background (advanced high school diploma and modules at university) approved on a case by case basis.

Sports Therapy (SP) modules are not available, the course is accredited and space is limited.

Nutrition (NF) modules may not be available as those on our Nutrition and Dietetics degree have limited avalability.  However, those from the Health Promotion degree may be a possibility.  Please email studyabroad@londonmet.ac.uk to register your interest and obtain more information.

    15. Can I take an Aviation (CA) module?

No, sorry, these are only open to full degree students.

    16. Why can't I take modules with codes like this: ***X* or ***F*?

These modules are from HND or Foundation courses, which are pre-undergraduate level and so not appropriate for Bachelors students.

    17. Do I need to fill out the alternative choices section of the MRF?

Yes. This section is important because we cannot guarantee that any courses will run or that we can place you in a class. We use the alternative modules list to replace a first choice if necessary. These alternatives must also be approved by an adviser to confirm that you are at the appropriate academic level and that your credit will transfer back to your home institution. You must list at least 4 alternatives.

    18. Why do I need to write the campus and timeslot for each of my modules on the MRF?

First, by looking up the timeslot for each module, you ensure that you are choosing modules scheduled to run in the correct semester. You also check that the classes you want to take don't clash. By writing the campus and timeslot for each module that you want to take, you not only save us time when checking your choices, but you also lower the chances that we will have to come back to you with a problem and make you go through the process of choosing classes all over again.

It is in your interest to fill out the form as comprehensively as possible so that we can register you for the classes you want.

    19. When will I find out whether I am registered for the classes I want to take and when do I get my schedule?

If there is a problem with your module choices we will email you to resolve the issue before you arrive. However, if everything looks fine then we will go ahead with registering you for classes and will not contact you to confirm your choices prearrival. You will receive your class schedule during orientation week and any last minute queries can be resolved then.

    20. Can I change my classes once I arrive in London?

You can change your modules during the first week of teaching if you have a good reason to do so and if there are spaces available in the class you wish to add. For example, if you find the class you are taking too hard/easy or the subject matter is not appropriate, we will do our best to fit you into an alternative. However, if all your modules are correct, we cannot change your assigned timeslots unless you have a clash.
