Professor Hessaby Scholarship

This scholarship was created in honour of Professor Mahmoud Hessaby who dedicated his life to physics, science, research and teaching.

Professor Hessaby was educated first in Beirut, he obtained his biology degree at the age of seventeen. He later earned Bachelor degrees in civil engineering, medicine, mathematics and astronomy. He continued researching in physics on 'Sensitivity of Photoelectric Cells' and received his PhD in the age of twenty-five from Sorbonne University.

He later returned to Iran and played a significant role in Iran’s development and modernisation. He established the University of Tehran, which was the first university in Iran. He was elected as culture minister in the 1950s and in 1973 and was awarded the medal of 'Commandeur de la Legion d’Honneur'.

Due to his invaluable services to science and his country, Professor Hessaby was given the title of 'Father of Modern Physics'.

The Dr Hessaby Foundation was established to continue all different aspects of his work, highlighting his belief that giving priority to research and researchers is the basis of scientific and industrial progress of a country.

The Professor Hessaby scholarship will support one student from Iran and covers the tuition fees for a Master's programme at London Metropolitan University.

Only students with a Bachelor's degree with a minimum GPA of 16/20 or a Master's degree, either of which must be from:

  • 'Daneshgahahaye Sarassari' (National Government University)
  • Tehran University
  • Sanaati Sharif University
  • Shahid Beheshti University
  • Amir Kabir University
  • Allameh Tabatabaie University
  • Azad Universities

Applications from students who have not studied at one of the universities listed will not be considered for the Professor Hessaby scholarship.

Important entry criteria

You must:

  • have an unconditional offer to study at London Met on one of the above Master's courses.
  • have a Bachelor's degree with a minimum GPA of 16/20 or a Master's degree, either of which must be from one of the Universities listed above. 
  • have an overall IELTS score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component or SELT equivalent.
  • be a national of Iran.

The deadline to submit a scholarship application form is 30 April 2015 for the September 2015 intake.

Applicants may be asked to attend an interview as part of the selection prosess.
