Eugene Attram Memorial Scholarship

London Metropolitan University offers a new undergraduate scholarship for UK students living in any London borough in memory of Eugene Attram. Whilst in the prime of his life Eugene was tragically murdered on 4th November, 2006 at the age of 16 years. He was an exemplary student at Ernest Bevin College in Tooting, had passed 11 GCSE’s plus one GNVQ ICT (4) and was hoping to go on to University. His favourite subjects were Art, English, History and Sports, football in particular, and table tennis.

At the time of his untimely passing, Eugene was studying for his Art, English and Business studies ‘A’ levels. He was academically gifted, bright and an all-rounder, good at many things. Aside from his sports and studies, he also enjoyed oil painting and had his work published on the College calendar and had exhibited with the Art department as well and being involved in the local community.

In 2004 he was awarded the Sportsman of the Year award as he won the Table Tennis tournament for Ernest Bevin College and upon receiving the award he humbly and characteristically said: "I find it a privilege to receive this award in such a talented environment".

In his spare time, when he wasn’t working part-time at TK Max, he was learning how to teach youngsters how to play table tennis and he had a dream of playing Table Tennis at the Olympics.

The Eugene Attram Scholarship is open to all first year UK students from any London Borough embarking on a Foundation, HND or Bachelors degree course at London Metropolitan University. The scholarship covers the full tuition costs for one student for the duration of the course.

We would particularly welcome applicants from Ernest Bevin College, however the scholarship is an open competition and undergraduate students from any London Borough, who have similar interests and qualities to Eugene (i.e. making a positive contribution and involvement in the local community, academically gifted, interested in the arts, football, table tennis, etc.) may apply for this scholarship. Any students applying for this scholarship must have an unconditional offer to study at London Met.

The deadline for receipt of the completed scholarship application form is Monday 3rd September, following the issue of the ‘A’ level results. A panel will award this scholarship to the most outstanding student who meets the stated criteria. The recipient will be advised by the middle of September.

We look forward to receiving applications for this unique scholarship opportunity which we hope will become a fitting tribute in memory of Eugene.

Tributes:

His College Tutor said in his last Report: "Eugene has attended Ernest Bevin College since September 2000 and always conducted himself in a diligent, sensitive and courteous manner. He has always enjoyed excellent relationships with members of staff and peer group alike and is an extremely popular member of the college community. Hard working, conscientious and reliable, Eugene has demonstrated qualities that have been evident throughout all of his time as a student at Ernest Bevin College. Eugene has engaged in a wide range of activities, representing the college at both football and athletics to a very high standard. Eugene has been a credit to himself, his family and the college and will be an asset to any future organisation."

Eugene also played football for a Sunday league team, ‘Wandle Wanderers’, and he played in right midfield position. He was a dedicated and loyal member of the team. At Eugene’s memorial service, his football manager said in tribute: "He never missed a penalty or a corner opportunity and is very missed by his team mates".

His mother, Maureen Enyonam, who works in the Finance department of London Metropolitan University, said of her son: "Eugene’s positive outlook would have given him the strength to accomplish great things and his confidence would have allowed him to take risks and not be afraid of failure. I sorely miss him."
