MA Management

"I am the second scholarship student to come to London Met from Kyrgyzstan. After finishing my degree (a BA in Economics), I was working in an auditing company there. Then I was offered a job at Osh State University, to teach courses in Management, Business Ethics and Economics — and I have been working there for almost three years. While I was there, I was involved in starting up one of five branches of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) in central Asia. We set this SIFE branch up in 2002, with the aim of encouraging universities and their students to develop and undertake social, educational and economic projects, often with sponsorship from or in partnership with external organisations.

As a motivational tool to encourage the universities and students to take part, we set up competitions to judge the best projects, with high-profile judges from different industries. It worked really well, since it was a great learning experience for the students, it helped to raise the profile and prestige of the universities involved, and the external companies found it useful both as a recruitment exercise and also in being able to progress various projects.

While I have been at London Met, I have just helped to create our first London Met team, and have taken part in a SIFE training programme with representatives from all over Britain. I am working to publicise it at the moment at events such as the Freshers Fair. Our projects here involve empowering and mobilising unemployed people — we try to address their real needs, and help them work on the skills they need to find a job. Our other project involves supporting sporting events at primary schools, including taking them through business plans. I hope that we can repeat the success we had with SIFE in Kyrgyzstan, since there are now national and international competitions."
