Kwan Browne

MSc International and Business Law

London Met's Denise Panattoni interviewed Kwan on Friday 24/9/04
Kwan Browne is the captain of the 2004 BUSA Cup winning London Met Field Hockey team. Kwan and his family live in James Leicester Hall on London Met's North campus and his musical tastes range from Caribbean music, soka and R & B. He enjoys chilling with his team mates on a Wednesday at The Rocket, London Met's place to be on North campus, and they also like to relax on a Sunday after the club games there too. Kwan isn't just a great and gifted sportsman, he has also done well in his academic studies and he's got an LLB degree and one Masters in European and International Law already under his belt. He's also studying for his second Masters at present, an MSc in International and Business Law. Kwan plans to take his Bar exams in New York in November and he hopes to qualify as an Attorney and practice eventually in Florida, where most of his family now reside.

Tell us about your background, please.
KB: I was born in Trinidad 1977 and after finishing school, I came to London and have studied at London Metropolitan University since 1998, when I joined the London Met Field Hockey team. At the time London Met were at least four divisions below where we are now, so we've come a long way and are now I'm proud to say First place in the BUSA rankings.
London Met: Well done and although you don't mention it that has plenty to do with you and your skills at playing the game and Captaining London Met to this top position, thank you! (Kwan's efforts helped us to move up a place in the league each year.)
KB: My family was always interested in Cricket and Hockey and I started playing hockey as a young boy, probably around six years of age or maybe younger.

What are your passions in life?
My life revolves around my wife, and our young son and (you guessed it), Field Hockey. We train on Monday evenings at Peter May our home ground in Walthamstow. It is a sand-filled pitch and training on it has had its advantages and it provides us with a win/win! Tuesday mornings we train on a water based pitch at Southgate and we have our games on Wednesdays. Thursday's are for Club hockey and I also coach the East Grinstead hockey team. Friday is officially my 'day-off' but I often also fill this day with hockey oriented duties as well. Then, at the weekends, there are club games being played, too which I am of course involved in.

You and the London Met Hockey team members have obviously worked very hard at achieving the number one BUSA Hockey ranking and successfully did this by beating Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Brunel, then beating Nottingham in the Quarter final and Loughborough in the semi-final, to then culminate with a spectacular win against BATH winning the final 5-4. KB: Winning these games and to Captain the hockey team and especially winning in the competitions against the 'redbricks' who are perceived to have so many more 'advantages' than us in the 'new' Universities, gave me great pleasure and satisfaction. I hope to retain the title for London Met this year as well.
London Met: Thank you, Kwan. We wish you and the Hockey team the best of luck for this year and for your future!

KB: I owe everything to London Metropolitan University as without them and their fantastic support and scholarships, I never could have achieved everything I've done to date and I really, really thank London Met from the bottom of my heart for this.

Kwan also hopes to take Club Hockey into the Premiership this year and he's convinced he can help this to happen. Also, he has recently been named Assistant Coach of the Trinidad National hockey team, as well. Kwan is currently sponsored by Dita (shoes) and Vampires (sticks and sportswear) and he works for London Met coaching hockey, as well. We wish him all the success with his future and we also thank Kwan for helping London Met to get to number one in the BUSA rankings and winning the cup as Sportsman of the Year. We hope they continue to retain this position this year thanks to his continued captaincy and the team's great efforts!

WELL DONE again, Kwan and the entire London Met Hockey team! Kwan was also honoured for his sporting achievements at London Met together with all the sports and academic scholars when they were presented with their scholarship certificates by the University's Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive, Brian Roper, at a gala Scholarship evening on 18 October, 2004 (see photos).
