MA Community Health, from USA/Mexico

"I grew up in Mexico and then moved to live in the United States and this has given me the opportunity to have gained work and life experiences in both countries. I was interested initially in International Relations because I wanted to learn languages and travel the world. This inspired me to go to University and I enrolled at San Diego State to study International Relations. In my third year I had a study abroad year at the University of Florence and learned Italian and travelled all over Italy and this was a fantastic experience.

At University, Professor Davies, my history professor (who called himself a 'Peruvianist') inspired me to develop an interest in Human Rights and indigenous communities and to visit Peru which I did in 2003. During this time I did volunteer work with poverty-stricken orphanages and health centres. I worked with a doctor, nurse and a dentist, travelling through the mountains to the local villages and providing basic treatment to the communities. I was amazed at how basic the treatment was on most occasions!

When I received news of my London Met scholarship I was so excited and am very grateful for this opportunity as I'm learning so many new things and find the entire experience very interesting and rewarding.
When I complete my Masters, I hope to work with the World Health Organisation, educating and developing successful health care programmes for developing countries."
