MA International Relations
September 2008

I was born in Cape Town, South Africa and was educated there up to a tertiary level. After completing an HND in Tourism I decided to work and travel for a few years. After working in Italy and the USA for 2 years I came to London to seek a job in the tourism field. I landed myself a position in the UK’s largest online Travel Agency based in Wimbledon. Although I thoroughly enjoyed the job I felt that I needed to obtain a degree in order to place myself in a better position within the job market.

I began looking for Universities which would recognise my previous work and educational qualifications. London Met was very efficient and accommodating in this regard, and before long they had approved my transcripts and accepted me onto the second year of the BA Business & International Tourism Management Program. In June I graduated with a first class honours degree. Whilst doing by BA I become very interested in International Relations after reading various publications and speaking to people in the field. By achieving a first class pass it meant I was eligible to apply for the London Met Alumni Scholarship. I applied for the scholarship in January 2008 and was awarded it in July. I am very grateful for being granted this award and for all the support I have received from my parents. The scholarship allows me to realise my true academic potential and helps open up many more doors in the career world.

I have been in London for three and half years now and I really enjoy it. The cultural diversity and wide variety of activities make it a great place to live. Its close proximity to the continent has allowed me travel in Europe fairly extensively. London Met has allowed me to meet people from a vast array of different cultural backgrounds and has enabled me to network and create future business relationships across the globe. Upon graduating I wish to secure an internship at the UN in New York and learn more about how the organisation operates. My long term goal is to work for an Aid Agency in South Africa helping to achieve the Millennium Development Goals set out by the UNDP.
