"I am from the Republic of Kenya, where I was doing voluntary work. I was involved in the anti-AIDS campaign, trying to stop the spread in Africa and to educate people — sometimes we used puppetry to try and get the message across, for example. I also worked as an environmental campaigner, organising a cleanup in Nairobi, and helping out as part of the UN environmental programme.

I found out about London Met when I was at an exhibition of British universities in Nairobi — there was a really captivating stand by the University and it was getting lots of attention — so I wanted to find out more. I chose to study Management in particular because it's still a relatively new field in Kenya. You can only study it up to Diploma level there, and I wanted to take my studies further. I'm really enjoying the course — the different teaching styles, the learning resources, and the student community in particular — it's like a representation of a mini-world where everybody's here! It makes it very unique! I'm also the student academic representative for the course, where I listen to people's complaints and grievances, pass them on and give them feedback. This has really helped to develop my communication skills, my confidence as well as my time management skills.

I have a short-term and a long-term vision of how I see things in the future — in the short-term I'd like to go back to Kenya and make use of the skills, experience and knowledge I have accumulated here. I envision working for one of the globally established humanitarian organisations, particularly OXFAM, USAID or the Red Cross Society, or for an NGO or government office where I can help with the welfare of the people. Long-term I would like to do a PhD with a view to becoming a specialist in the profession, and perhaps eventually become a lecturer in Kenya, so that management can begin to be taught over there at postgraduate level."
