Dr. Muhammad Shahidullah Scholarship

This scholarship is in honour of Dr Muhammad Shahidullah, who was passionate about education.

History:  Dr Muhammad Shahidullah was the first Indian Muslim to receive a doctorate degree.  He graduated from the Sorbonne in Paris in 1928 and was awarded a PhD for his research on the distiches of the Charyapada, the earliest extant specimens of Bangla language.

After completing his doctorate, he returned to Bangladesh and started teaching. In 1937, when the Sanskrit and Bangla Department was split into two separate departments,  he became head of the Bangla Department. He retired from this position in 1944.

The Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Scholarship supports one student from Bangladesh and covers the tuition fees for a Masters programme at London Metropolitan University.

This year's winner is Mr Mahbub Alam, Clinical Physiotherapist in charge of stroke rehabilitation at the widely respected Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralyed (CRP), in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He will be joining the University in September to study for MSc Public Health.

As well as five years experience in managing stroke rehabilitation programmes, Mahbub also has a strong track record of voluntary activities including organising disability sports events, and a range of acting, dance and modelling assignments.

"I am very happy about winning this prestigious scholarship. Dr Muhammad Shahidullah has such a strong reputation in my country and I am very proud to be able to represent the best of Bangladesh through this programme.

Public health initiatives are very important in our country; there are huge inequalities in health and this sort of course will help me create a platform on which to remove the prejudices against people with disabilities in Bangladesh."

London met's scholarship is decided anually by panel of eminent academics and business people in Bangladesh. "It is very important for us that theses scholarships are decided in Bangladesh, by Bangladeshis and the University", said Mark Bickerton, Director of Student Recruitment and International development at London Metropolitan University.
