Centres for women's history, women's and gender studies

The tools below can help researchers and prospective students locate educational institutions, research centres and courses which focus on the study of women's history, women's studies or gender studies. As well as UK based centres, some European and international centres are also included further below. The index is not comprehensive, and suggestions for additions are welcome.

In addition there is a Guide to Recent Doctoral Dissertations pertaining to both women's history and women's health issues. Although based in the USA the guide relates to world wide doctorates.  Topics of interest in HSLS with a specific gender bias are Human Sexuality; Nursing history;  women's Health and History.  Some UK Doctoral Dissertations are available via the British Library, you can search in the Advanced search for (Library of Congress Subject Headings) LCSH.  The Institute of Historical Research collates a list of Theses in Progress - however this does not have a subject index so you need to browse the list for gender specific topics.

University of California at Berkeley: Gender & Women's Studies
The Berkeley Women's Studies Program was founded in 1976 to expand the existing curriculum by introducing the subject of women into serious academic inquiry. Women's studies considers the position of women throughout history, across the world, and in different economic, ethnic and racial groups. It engages the question of gender itself: although all societies make gender distinctions, how do they differ from one culture to another, how have definitions of male and female roles evolved, how are they perpetuated, and how might they be redefined? It examines the sexual inequality and conflict created by gendered roles and the rapid transformation of those roles today.
