Quick search
Quick search examines the following fields in the Collections records:
- Title
- Administrative/biographical history
Information on the origin and work of an organisation and/or the life and work of an individual - Custodial history (library and museum collections) OR Archival history (archive collections)
Indicates changes in ownership and custody of the collection that are significant for its authenticity, integrity and interpretation - Scope and content
Identifies time periods, geography, documentary form, subject matter and administrative processes so users can judge the relevance of the collection for their research
Searching is not case sensitive. The term entered will be matched anywhere it occurs.
EG suff will match:
"sufferings", "Suffolk",
"suffrage", "suffragette"
Full text search
Searches every field in the Collections records. The full text search takes longer than the Quick search.
Searches are not case sensitive. The term entered will be matched anywhere it occurs.
EG brit will match: "British civilian nurse", "I'm backing Britain"
Advanced Searching
Advanced Search allows you to refine your searches using one or more of the following fields:
Search Field
The search will examine either the Title field or the Quick Search fields (see Quick Search, above). If no search term is entered, all results will be shown.
Searching is not case sensitive. The term entered will be matched anywhere it occurs.
EG art will match: "art books", "women in the arts", "Martha McCrae"
To narrow searching, use a space before and/or after the search string.
EG " art" [space-a-r-t] will match: "art books" and "women in the arts" but not "Martha McCrae"
EG " art " [space-a-r-t-space] will match: "art books" but not "women in the arts" or "Martha McCrae"
Search Date
Examines the date fields, for year only. Dates entered are inclusive (eg 'Before 1970' matches years up to and including 1970). 'Before' and 'After' can be searched separately or combined.
EG 'after 1900 and before 1920' will match records covering the period 1900-1920 inclusive.
Search Access Points
Optionally examines: Personal names (NB surname only), Family names, Corporate names, Place names or Subject.
EG Subject: suffrage
EG Corporate Name: association
EG Place name: India
Search Repository
Limits your search to a particular repository.

Search the contents of:
- the Surname field in Personal_Names
- the Surname field in Family_Names
- the Organisation field in Corporate_Names
- the Location field in Places
- the Subject field in Subjects
Searching is not case sensitive. The term entered will be matched anywhere it occurs.
EG mill will match: "Macmillan, Margaret", "Mill, Harriet Taylor", "Romilly, Jane"
