How are the collections described?

Archives are described according to the International Standard of Archival Description [ISAD(G)]. Archive descriptions can be submitted to the Archives Hub as collection level descriptions or as full catalogues.

The Hub provides information on how to contact the institutions, and have provided links to their websites, where applicable.

Library and museum collections submit collection level descriptions only.  Essentially these are very similar to archive collection level descriptions, consisting of the key 'Dublin Core' fields with some additional access points (subject, place corporate and personal name indices).  We are focussing on holding simple descriptions which reflect 'real' collections that are predominantly by and about women.

For researchers, Genesis is a fantastic way of discovering where records are located around the British Isles. For example if you are interested in finding out more about Greenham Common, you will discover that records are located at the Modern Records Centre, University of Warwick, The Women's Library, Feminist Archive (South) etc. This centralised way of searching will save you much time and effort in your research and give a comprehensive picture of the women's history research resources in the British Isles.
