Archives are described according to the International Standard of Archival Description [ISAD(G)]. Archives are described at the highest level, ie at collection level, not at individual item level. The information on Genesis can be treated as a signpost to direct researchers to repositories that hold relevant collections. We have provided information on how to contact these repositories in the parent record, and have provided links to their websites, where applicable.
Library and museum collections are described in a different manner, due to this being a newer discipline in these communities and there not being a standard method of collection description. We have designed a set of description terms which will provide the researcher with the relevant information to determine whether they want to pursue their research at that repository. All collections will be indexed in the following fields: subject, corporate, family and personal names, place names, this will ensure that researchers can access the collections through various routes.
For researchers, Genesis is a fantastic way of discovering where records are located around the British Isles. For example if you are interested in finding out more about Greenham Common, you will discover that records are located at the Modern Records Centre, University of Warwick, The Women's Library, Feminist Archive (South) etc. This centralised way of searching will save you much time and effort in your research and give a comprehensive picture of the women's history research resources in the British Isles.
