What is Genesis?

Genesis is a mapping initiative that supports research into women's history. It consists of:

  1. A Dataset with descriptions of women's history collections from museums, libraries and archives in the United Kingdom
  2. A Guide to Sources that provides access to a wide range of national and international web resources on women's history.

In Spring 2011 the Genesis dataset is being relaunched in collaboration with the Archives Hub.  This will bring together almost 200 institutions across the UK, which will be contributing data.  It will greatly improve the quality of the women's collections being identified for Genesis users and make it easier for institutions to contribute collection details.

Genesis was initially developed with funding from the Research Support Libraries Programme (RSLP) by a project led by the Women's Library and was launched in Spring 2002.

Since then it has been maintained by the staff of The Women's Library at London Metropolitan University.

The most recent work to relaunch and maintain the Genesis dataset has been supported by The Women's Library, London Metropolitan University and  the Archives Hub.

The Archives Hub is a Mimas service, funded by JISC and based at The University of Manchester.
