Developing a framework for designing Knowledge Management System (KMS)
by Mr Gaga Ali Thomas and Supervisors (Prof. Farhi Marir, Dr. Romas Mikusauskas and Mrs Preeti Patel)
Abstract:
Today's economy is generally referred to as a knowledge-based economy. Organizations
are managing knowledge so as to enable their workers to learn faster more
efficiently, develop their competencies faster, retain organizational knowledge
and to be innovative and creative. With the explosive growth of interest
in knowledge management, different frameworks for designing Knowledge Management
Systems (KMS) have been produced by various researchers for successful
implementation of knowledge initiatives. However, the existing frameworks
do not provide a complete and generalized framework for designing knowledge
management system by defining the key fundamental attributes of KMS and
a systematic methodology for implementing KMS. Hence, a need to improve
on the current KMS frameworks so as to ensure that the framework comprehensively
consists of key fundamental attributes and a systematic methodology for
implementation, in order to reduce the level of failure of Knowledge Management
(KM) projects and loss in revenue incurred by organizations in implementing
KM projects.
This talk will present the contribution of the PhD research to the stream of research on knowledge management by proposing an improved integrated KMS framework from a multidimensional approach, taking into consideration the key fundamental attributes of KM initiatives, such that it could represent a universal framework for designing KMS.
Existing KMS frameworks focus on the core layer that deals with technology, social-human and knowledge. The proposed KMS framework enhances the existing framework with two new layers (or dimensions): Sustainability layer to reflect the organisation philosophy and learning processes and the Outcome layer for defining the benefits of implementing KMS in terms of efficiency, effectiveness, innovation and competitive advantage.
The multidimensional approach integrate these three layers as a single framework for developing KMS, thereby provides a window into work in a number of reference disciplines that would enrich the utility of KMS and also open up fruitful areas for future research.

Technology.

Prof. Farhi Marir, Director of Study (MSc, PhD, FBCS, CITP) is Professor of
computer science & director
of the Knowledge Management Research Centre in the Faculty of Computing (FoC).
He led more than 15 EU & UK funded research projects. Four of them related
to this PhD research: mPAS (Mobile Proactive Anti-Obesity System) KC funded project
for using health knowledge base to monitor and advise students on their daily
food intake, OSCON DoE funded project extended for managing and sharing knowledge
in construction projects, VIGILANT (private funding) extended to manage information
and knowledge acquired from CCTV surveillance video cameras, DSEO KTP funding
for the development of a dynamic search engine. He also led 10 PhDs to completion:
three of them developed content-based (semantic) indexing and retrieval algorithms
for text and multimedia documents. Currently, Prof. Marir is supervising six
PhD students two of them working on investigating knowledge transfer and share
in petroleum companies and mapping relation database to semantic web models respectively.
