The Fabric of the City exhibition at Discovering Collections, Discovering Communities (DCDC) Conference

Senior Lecturer on The Cass's Textile Design BA course, Gina Pierce, will be presenting a paper at the Discovering Collections, Discovering Communities Conference at the Lowry Centre in Salford this month. Organised by the National Archives and Research Libraries UK, the conference brings together leading museums, galleries and universities to discuss the future of collections and archives.

Gina will be giving a paper on the impact of The Fabric of the City exhibition which she organised last year and was held in the Bank Gallery at The Cass. At the exhibition, textile and fashion designers based in east London were invited to respond to the Spitalfield Silks archive in the Museum of London. Although unaccustomed to working from archive material, the designers were inspired to produce creatively varied outcomes, including an installation, digital print, hand weave, 3D print, a latex garment and Perspex millinery.

Gina’s paper demonstrates how museums can attract new audiences through the interpretation of archive material by using textile and fashion design to provide a contemporary relevance. The prospective cultural and social impact of the exhibition was recognised with the award of an Arts Council Grant, and played a part of the Fashion Summer School held at The Cass.
