Cass Interiors and Jewellery students are collaborating on an installation for the offices of KMPG in Manchester

The installation for KPMG Manchester is the result of a brief asking that it communicate four main narratives that characterize the city: Northern Soul Dancing, Sport, Music and Industrialism. The use of copper tubes, large brass cogs, music vinyls, bike wheels, aluminium and neon rope will form an interactive sculpture, playfully merging the narratives to create one piece.

Louisa Cole, Francesca Parpinal, Martina Terraciano and Selena Cerami were approached by Tom O'Neil of KPMG as they had previously produced photographic images for the main staircase at 15 Canada Square to create presence within this secondary space and encourage employees to take the stairs. Tom asked them to design/create a sculptural piece for KPMG's new Manchester offices.

In March, Louisa and Francesca went to the new offices in Manchester and presented their idea to a panel at KPMG who were delighted and the project is approved for fabrication.

As this is a metal piece, throughout the maquette stage Simone ten Hompel, Reader in Silversmithing at The Cass liaised with the students. The students went to a scrap yard in the east End and found four massive gears, which they are using alongside bike wheels and items from the metals workshop.

Now that the design is agreed two of Simone's students Maciek Szpicer and Alun Evans are helping create the 1:1 version taking transportation and access issues into account. The team hope the final installation will be ready by the Summer.
