Korean mini festival

Alongside the British Council and the Korean Cultural Centre, we're hosting a festival of contemporary Korean architecture and wider Korean culture.

Date: 02/02/2015

To accompany its upcoming exhibition, Out of the Ordinary: Award-Winning Works by Young Korean Architects, The Cass, London Metropolitan University, in partnership with the British Council and the Korean Cultural Centre, is hosting a one-day festival to explore and celebrate contemporary Korean architecture and its relation to wider Korean culture.

The day will begin with a series of drop-in workshops run by Joho Architecture and Wise Architecture, two of the award-winning practices featured in the exhibition. These hands-on sessions, aimed at everyone from children to architectural professionals, will encourage participants to actively engage with the projects and material experimentations highlighted in Out of the Ordinary. Each session will centre on a different material or technique that is key to the architects’ work.

In Endless Triangles Jeonghun Lee from Joho Architecture will explore metal fabrication using paper-thin sheets of steel to demonstrate new methods of fabricating steel facades and simple structures.

In Material Landscape the team from Wise Architecture, together with local architect Chris Dyson, will lead a walking tour of Spitalfields to compare the domestic and industrial uses of brick in Seoul and London, a material that is central to the practice’s work. The session will conclude with a slideshow and discussion on Seoul’s brick architecture, led by Sook Hee Chun of Wise Architecture.

The day will culminate with a panel discussion, Generation A: what it means to be a young architect in Korea and the UK. The conversation aims to analyse the contextual conditions that young architects need to consider and draw a parallel between Korea and the UK. Is it possible to identify a specific condition of being ‘young’ in architecture?

Chaired by Vicky Richardson, director of Architecture, Design and Fashion at the British Council, the expert panel will include Hyungmin Pai, Out of the Ordinary curator and Golden Lion Winner at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale, Haewon Shin of Korean architecture practice Lokal Design, Phil Christou of the award-winning Architecture Research Unit (ARU) at The Cass, and architecture critic Ellis Woodman.

On 13 February at 5pm, Project Red will see Cass Fashion students exhibit work in a live catwalk show using the Out of the Ordinary exhibition as both backdrop and inspiration.

Out of the Ordinary is Hyungmin Pai’s first exhibition since his winning pavilion and will bring together the work of nine winners of the prestigious Korean Young Architect Award for the first time in London. The show explores the recent radical changes to Korea’s built environment and looks at how young practices must adapt to new challenges with unconventional solutions.
