Book Launch in São Paulo: Unevenness

Please join us at Escola da Cidade for the launch of the publication Unevenness which is the outcome of our shared discussions in Brazil last year.

Date: 21 November 2014

Unevenness reflects on Unit 3’s interests in looking and ideas. The book contains selected drawings and texts that articulate the student’s engagement with and speculations on São Paulo's downtown area, alongside transcriptions of selected lectures given as part of last year’s Brazil Programme at the Cass in London.

The event includes a pin-up of work from the 3-day collaborative workshop with Cass and Escola da Cidade students, In the Valley, working in Vale do Anhangabaú exploring ideas of topography and exchange.

The first phase of the Brazil Programme runs for five years is now in its 4th year running. The programme is led by Sandra Denicke-Polcher and Dann Jessen, Director of East and Diploma Unit 3 Master. The programme includes a collaboration with Escola da Cidade and São Paulo students working at the Cass to support research aspects of the programme. Through project based work on sites in São Paulo the programme is researching opportunities for how new developments within the city can be carefully designed to strengthen existing qualities and contribute to the public realm with generosity. In São Paulo Cass students have been studying projects by Lina Bo Bardi, Oscar Niemeyer, João Batista Vilanova Artigas and Paulo Mendes da Rocha as well as visited local practices such as Hereñu + Ferroni Arquitetos and MMBB who are teaching at Escola da Cidade. The programme is also collaborating with the City of São Paulo Department of Housing and Urban Development (SEHAB) and the Secretary for Urban Development.
