A team of second year BA (Hons) Events Management students took over Holloway campus last semester where they treated students to a feast of street food and dance performances.

Sue Blake, Luis Fernandes, Andrea Hundeyin, Zivile Kuleviciute and Mustaf Musse conceived planned and produced the event which featured five different street food stands and performances from London Met student volunteers. The event was supported by the Guildhall Creative Projects Society and the London Metropolitan University Student’s Union and raised over £150 for World Vision - the world’s largest international children’s charity which works to bring real hope to millions of children in the world’s hardest places.

The event, sponsored by Tesco and Waitrose, was part of the BA (Hons) Event Management programme, student teams had to design, plan and evaluate a real event outside the classroom. Dr Tom Lunt, Senior Lecturer in Creative Industries Management said "The module requires students to draw on the skills and knowledge from their course and apply it to an event idea they come up with. It was great to see this group come together as a team and exceed their own goals – especially in support of such a good cause."

There was something for everyone at the market; gluten free alternatives as well as vegetarian and vegan options. Food company Chilli Nachos were serving gluten free nachos as well as their standard wheat tortillas, Bian Dang, serving Thai food, One Love Kitchen serving Caribbean cuisine, and Bombay Street Food who were dishing up Indian curries to staff and students. Those interested in the Middle Eastern flavours could go to Feast.

Second year Events Management student Sue Blake said, "We got a great deal of positive feedback on the  event from both students and vendors one of whom has secured a job and is very pleased that he got 30+ Facebook likes. We are hoping that this event may become a regular feature"

The Food Market was got great feedback from LMU students:

“I’ve never seen so many people in the courtyard before,” said MSc Criminology student Giacomo Fantini.

“It’s good to have so many different foods to try and I was even speaking a bit of Chinese with one of the food distributors.

“It’s not that expensive and we should have a food market more often, definitely in the summer.”

Ali Aburigh, currently studying BSc Biomedical Science said there was a “good mix of cultures. It’s a good idea to have all these different cultures together. This should definitely be a regular event here at London Met.”

Computing Engineering student, Edgar Prada, said it would be good to see the street food market become part of London Met’s One Campus, One Community project and made also accessible to the public.

Other events in the programme include a Take me to Rio night at the Rocket which raised funds for SportsAid and Project Platinum which is due to take place on 7 April in the Rocket.
