Mike Meehan

Mike joined the Faculty in 2004 and is a graduate of the National University of Ireland (NUI) Galway (1993), of Université Pierre Mendes-France/Grenoble II (1996), of the University of Kent at Canterbury (1997), and of King’s College, London (2000). Mike read for a Bachelor of Arts degree in French and Italian languages and literature while an undergraduate in Ireland before then graduating in England and France with a second undergraduate degree in English and French law. His Masters degree in law focused on UK and European Public Law.
He previously taught at Université Montesquieu (Bordeaux IV), France (1997-1999) and at Liverpool John Moores University (2000-2004). His main teaching interests lie in the subjects of UK Public Law, EU Law, Human Rights, and Refugee and Asylum Law in its European context. Mike is Deputy Director of the CPE Graduate Diploma in Law programme and is module leader for the course subjects of UK Public Law and of European Law. He also teaches European Law on the undergraduate LLB/BA programme.
Mike’s research interests are broadly in Comparative, UK and European Public Law and in the philosophy and application of human rights within Europe in particular. Of special interest to his academic research is the move towards formalising rights protection in the form of Bills of Rights, conventions and monitoring bodies, marking a move away from political mechanisms and activities. Mike is presently completing a PhD focusing on human rights and the EU under the supervision of Professor Peter Fitzpatrick at Birkbeck College, University of London.
Part of Mike’s work was published in the first English language book on the EU Charter (The EU Charter of Fundamental Rights: text and commentaries, Federal Trust/Kogan Page 2000) and in The EU Handbook (Fitzroy Dearborn: 2nd ed. 2002). He has also published work on the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (Towards a Northern Ireland Bill of Rights, Liverpool Law Review No1 2001 pp 33-56).
Mike was a member of the Executive Committee of the Socio-Legal Studies Association (SLSA) from 2002-2005 and organised the association’s national postgraduate conference at Liverpool John Moores School of Law in January 2004. He was also a key organizer of a regional conference on Refugee and Asylum issues that took place at the same venue in March 2004. He is a member of the Editorial Board of an international and refereed law journal, the Liverpool Law Review. He is also an external examiner for the CPE course at the University of Westminster. Mike is also an Associate of the Human Rights and Social Justice Research Institute at London Met.
