MA International Security Studies

Welcome to the fascinating world of Security Studies, one of the most important areas of International Relations. Our Masters in International Security Studies will help you to make sense of the multitude of problems being faced by the international community today. Issues such as

  • clashes between and within civilisations,
  • terrorism,
  • the causes of war,
  • the failures of multilateralism in a world dominated by sovereign states,
  • the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction,
  • the emergence of influential non-state actors,
  • international crime and people trafficking

are just a few of the problems facing us as a world. An MA in International Security Studies will not only equip you to analyse these types of problems but will expose you to the important inter-disciplinary links with International Relations. As demonstrated by the events on September 11 2001 and the subsequent ongoing war on terrorism, security issues remain a vital component of the global agenda.

The establishment of a just peace after the end of the Cold War has proved to be elusive and war, armed conflict and terror attacks continue across the globe. At the same time security incorporates more than just states and conflict. Domestic social problems, human rights violations and acts of violence perpetrated by states against their own citizens also have the effect of diminishing our levels of security.

Our Masters Degree seeks to provide students with the theoretical and conceptual tools by which they can analyse these issues. This will open up opportunities for them to engage with individuals and institutions central to this area.
