MA European Studies
Both the international system as a whole and the European Union (EU) are highly complex and may be analysed and interpreted in a variety of ways. For example, many have argued that the contemporary world has been transformed by the phenomenon of ‘globalisation’, while others have maintained that the major states have remained the key international actors. Similarly, while some have viewed the EU itself as a quasi state, others have emphasised the continuing importance of national governments in its policy-making system. Furthermore, the role of the EU in the wider world is also contentious, with some analysts discerning an increasingly significant independent European profile, while others have argued that the real influences are either above the EU in a US-led system or below it at the level of the member states.
