Tackling International Relocation - Research by Londonmet Academic cited by Court of Appeal Judge
Not enough is known about the impact of international relocation on children, as recently confirmed by Lord Justice Wall, President of the Family Division of the High Court, citing research and academic commentby Professor Marilyn Freeman of the Centre for Family Law and Practice.
The Centre's work has received increasing attention since a successful conference in Summer 2010, and the judge's decision in the recent Court of Appeal case re W (children) (relocation:removal outside jurisdiction) [2011] EWCA Civ 345 highlighted just how crucial that work now is to resolving complex problems in Family Law. Lord Justice Wall stated: ˜
unless and until we have the research identified by Professor Freeman .......relocation cases will remain fact specific, the subject of discretionary decisions.'
The Centre is continuing to work on research in the areas of the 2010 conference, International Child Abduction, Forced Marriage and Relocation. Their next seminar, which is a dedicated Relocation event held in collaboration with the specialist chambers of 4
Paper Buildings, and at which Lord Justice Thorpe, Head of International Family Justice, High Court, England, will be speaking, will be on 5th May 2011.
