Science Centre

>> Take the Science Centre Virtual Tour

The University has invested over £30 million in developing the Science Centre, which offers unparalleled facilities for teaching and research. One the key features of this facility is a Super Lab, giving students a cutting edge experience of learning science.

The facilities in the new science centre will provide an opportunity for students to develop their understanding of the scientific basis of human activity by working with data that has a unique immediacy and greater quantity than is normally possible in university labs.

For example, sports and nutrition students will be able to study the physiological effects of exercise, collect data for extended analyses and investigate the interrelationships between exercise, health and nutrition and verify these through appropriate analyses.

A significant part of the students' practical experiences will be in project-based teams that extend across disciplines.

Research
The new centre provides excellent opportunities for research at all levels and across all subjects. Health and Nutrition research is already well advanced in the University within the Department and in the Institute for Health Research & Policy.

The new facilities open up new possibilities for studying the health of the local community whilst simultaneously providing data for teaching and research:

  • Nutrition staff have run and will continue to run the Weight Loss Clinic that not only helps members of the public manage their health but supports research.
  • The Department has run a 'mother and baby' clinic for a number of years in Hackney and we will be providing similar support for the local community.
  • We have two high profile research units, the Institute of Brain Chemistry and Human Nutrition and the Microbiology Research Unit that will benefit from the enhanced facilities.
  • The gym and sports facilities open new avenues for integrated research projects across a number of areas. It will provide research opportunities in sports science that are un-equalled in the London area.
  • Research students and staff in the biomedical, biological and pharmaceutical sciences will benefit from the state-of-the-art laboratories.
  • The development of strong links with schools, the nutrition clinics and other external links with hospitals, research centres and industry networks, will not only support local communities and provide research prospects but will maintain the currency of our teaching.
  • There will also be significant opportunities for research into the pedagogy of science.

Media Clips

In October 2006, BBC2 filmed Dr David McCarthy, reader in Human Nutrition for the Institute for Health Research & Policy at the Science Centre for a new series, 'The Truth About Food'.

The episode filmed was 'How To Be Slim'. The BBC uploaded a clip of the footage on their website at the link below, which has shots of the nutrition lab, the super-lab, and the Science Centre itself. Click on the link 'Is my metabolism to blame for my weight?' to view the clip.
