Role

Senior Lecturer and Course Leader, MA Equality and Diversity.

Irene has taught women’s studies and related subjects at London Metropolitan since 1998, and is currently course leader for the MA Equality and Diversity. She is the author of Against Purity: Rethinking Identity with Indian and Western Feminisms (Routledge, 1999) and of articles published in the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, Camera Obscura, Feminist Review and the European Journal of Women’s Studies.

Her publications and research interests are in the areas of identity, power and female embodiment, the intersections of gender, race and ethnicity in white Western and postcolonial feminist theory, and representations of women in popular culture. Her current research is on questions of home, identity and belonging in relation to representations of migrant women, migrant women’s practices of cultural reproduction, and questions of difference and intersectionality in Equality and Diversity discourses. She supervises research students in these and related areas, and runs a regular forum for PhD students at London Met working on gender-related issues.

Irene is a member of the Feminist Review editorial collective, and has also been involved in a UK-India collaborative project on developing women’s studies teaching and research with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Mumbai, India.
