Social Work is about making relationships with people in order to enable to access services and support which they might need to fully participate in society.

London Metropolitan University offers a range of qualifying and post-qualifying courses in social work and is a vibrant place to study the subject. We've a diverse student and staff community, and we place an emphasis on the application of research and theory to social work practice.

What's more, we offer a committed and innovative approach, with lectures, workshops, seminars, role plays, videos and tutorials all utilised in the learning process.

Our Courses

Social Work teaching and learning seeks to consider questions such as:

  • How can we achieve social justice and work to ensure human rights?
  • What is anti-oppressive practice, how does this differ from anti-discriminatory practice and what is the role of legislation in this area?
  • How can you ensure ethically informed practice? How does this relate to professional codes of practice/conduct?
  • What is a ‘good social worker’? What informs and develops quality in social work practice?

Our Students

Some of our students talking about their course, profession and future. 

Students go on to a wide range of roles within the field of social work. The course is designed to meet the requirements of the regulating body and practice placements are a core aspect of our programmes. Social worker’s roles often involve assessing the needs of individuals, investigating the levels of risk and making recommendations about courses of action.  They can do this in a variety of settings, for example local authorities, health services, voluntary and charitable organisations and schools. Social work takes place in:

  • children’s services
  • hospitals in multi-disciplinary teams (with adults and/or children)
  • Youth Offending Teams - multi-disciplinary teams with children and young people who are at risk of offending or have committed an offence
  • secure settings, such as prisons and secure hospitals
  • therapeutic services and mental health teams in the community
  • children and families courts
  • advisory services
  • adult learning disabilities teams
  • older people’s services

There are usually a small number of international and European students on our BSc and MSc social work courses. There are also courses aimed directly at those from abroad including the professional doctorate and the certificate in international social work.

Our Staff and their research expertise

There is a wide range of research expertise in the social work team. Staff are involved in research and training, consultancy roles with social work-based agencies, and representation on London-wide strategic bodies responsible for social work education. There is a commitment to using research

Our Partners

We work with a wide range of organisations concerned with social work education and policy including: the GSCC, JSWEC, SCIE, SWEN, YJB, Ministry of Justice, Social Policy Association. We are also able to draw upon our fast-expanding service user and carer network group, which benefits all students on our programmes.

Continuing Professional Development

Our short courses in Continuing Professional Development link research, policy and training provision to meet the needs of a wide range of professional staff groups. The training offered is grounded in up-to-date research, theory and practice experience. Courses include introduction to child protection, joint investigation training in child protection, training the trainers, and people skills.

These short courses include managing people, groups and teamwork, project management, performance management, policy developments and managing change. We work in partnership with public service organisations to develop bespoke training to meet specific management and leadership development needs. Drawing upon a wide range of learning methods, they attract academic credits for participants who successfully complete designated work-based assessment.
