The Public Health and Wellbeing subject area offers a stimulating multi-disciplinary environment where you can learn about vital public health issues and think about ways of tackling health and social problems, including more effective delivery of services. Unique aspects of our public health approach include an emphasis on: the wider determinants of health, social epidemiology, health policy, health impact assessment, mental health, human rights, heath care ethics and empowering individuals and communities in relation to their wellbeing.

Our Courses and programmes

Our portfolio of programmes, from short courses through to doctoral level studies, offers academic progression and career enhancement. We work in close partnership with many NHS, voluntary and social care organisations as well as international academic partners in the USA and South Africa. There is a strong emphasis on inter-professional learning, evidence based practice and employment skills: many programmes have professional accreditation. Careful organisation and planning of our courses allows the integration of high quality teaching materials and methods, including e-communication and opportunities for ‘hands on’ experience.  Whichever course you take undergraduate, postgraduate or short courses for professional development, our aim is to provide a supportive learning environment to enable personal development and a rewarding career that contributes to the future health and wellbeing of populations wherever you are.

Our Research and other activities

The Public Health and Wellbeing subject area research activity is embedded within the work of Centre for Primary Health & Social Care. Our activities support the development of best practice and outcomes in health and social care working in partnership with our key stakeholders and especially service users.   This work involves: research, evaluation, consultancy, project management, health impact assessment, practice and workforce development. We have active public health initiatives such as the Health and Wellbeing Centre that makes a major contribution towards being a healthy University.  There are opportunities for students to participate in the Centre’s activities, whether international, national or local projects supervised by our expert staff.  Particular research interests are: mental health, HIV, obesity, long term conditions; primary care; advocacy and policy making and are used to inform our teaching.
