Alya Khan
Alya Khan is Senior Lecturer in Health Ethics in the Department of
Applied Social Sciences and the Department of Health & Human
Sciences at London Metropolitan University.
She has developed and teaches undergraduate and postgraduate
modules in Healthcare Ethics, Bioethics and Ethical Issues in
Biomedical Sciences to a wide range of students, many of whom are
preparing for professional roles in healthcare practice, biomedical and
genetic research, and health policymaking. She also designed and
teaches a postgraduate module in Gender & Human Rights on the
MA/LLM in Human Rights and Social Justice.
She has a BA(Hons) and an MPhil in Philosophy from UCL, where she
concentrated on social and political philosophy and ethics, writing her
dissertation on Gender and Political Obligation. Her doctoral work,
conducted at Birkbeck College, and entitled ‘Relational Autonomy and
Narrativity in Health Ethics’ deals with an account of the concept of
autonomy, as applied in health contexts, that foregrounds its
relational nature and argues for a narrative and not a narrowly
principalist approach to understanding autonomous decision-making in
health ethics. She has focussed particularly on dilemmas in
reproductive health, considering matters of rights in this area,
especially for vulnerable groups and those amongst the least advantaged
in different societies.
Previously, she taught moral and political philosophy modules as a
Visiting Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy at London Met, as
well as philosophy courses at The City Literary Institute and at
Birkbeck College’s Centre for Continuing Education.
She is a member of the Society for Women in Philosophy, UK, the
International Network of Feminist Approaches to Bioethics, and the
Network for European Women’s Rights, amongst other affiliations.
