Professor Simon Hallsworth discusses authoritarianism in Sage journal
Professor Simon Hallsworth, academic leader on London Met’s BA in Criminology, and Professor John Lea have had a new article published in the prestigious journal of Theoretical Criminology published by Sage. The piece ‘Reconstructing Leviathan: emerging contours of the security state’ makes the argument that there is an emerging security state characterised by a new authoritarianism which is replacing the liberal welfare state.
The evidence, according to Hallsworth and Lea, is most apparent in three key areas- the transition from welfare to workfare and risk management; new measures to combat terrorism and organised crime; and the blurring of warfare and crime control. The article can be read in full at Theoretical Criminology, 15 (2) 141-157.
