Life Stories with George Aligiah
For BBC newsreader George Alagiah, his visit to London Met as a special guest of the ‘An evening with...’ series of events proved to be a fascinating trip down memory lane, one which included recollections of a life on three continents - Asia, Africa and Europe.
During the interview with Dr Gholam Khiabany of the Department of Applied Social Sciences, Mr Alagiah spoke of his birth in Sri Lanka, childhood in Ghana and life as an adult in the UK.
When asked for his views on multicultural Britain today, the London Met honorary degree holder said: ‘We should not be asking each other "Where are you from?" or "What cricket team do you support?" Instead we should be asking each other what we contribute to society and value people’s input, not their background.’
Gholam Khiabany is the course Leader for the BSc In Media Studies. Gholam's research interests centre on media and social change and the relationship between communication, development and democracy with particular reference to Iran. Gholam welcomes applications from students interested in undertaking postgraduate research in these areas.
