Effect of fish feeding on obesegenic markers and cognitive function in Omani schoolchildren

Epidemiological studies have suggested that incidence of ischemic heart disease is significantly lower in populations consuming a diet rich in marine products (i.e. fish, seafood, etc). Fish and seafood are primary source of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, namely eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3). Studies have also suggested that increased consumption of EPA and/or DHA might help children with behavioral problems such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

This joint project which is led and funded by Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries Wealth, Sultanate of Oman will investigate if feeding schoolchildren of 9 to 11 years old fish meal 4 days a week for four months modulate blood lipid profile and cognitive function.

This project will be carried out in collaboration with Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, and Sultan Qaboos University, Sultanate of Oman.
