History made as Life Sciences Attempts to Break Records

Sports Science senior lecturer Christina Jacklin set herself the daunting task of creating a new world record.

A total of 122 FoLS students and staff attempted to set a record for the highest number of poeple simultaniously holding an abdominal plank for a minute.

Our thanks go to Christina for all of her hard work and everyone who helped out on the day.

Lecturer authors worrying report of child weakness

Daniel Cohen, Senior Lecturer in Sports Science is the lead author of a worrying report which shows a dramatic decline in children’s strength over the last 10 years.

Daniel worked with fellow Life Sciences lecturer Anne Delextrat and four researchers fromthe University of Essex to produce the report, published in the journal of child health, Acta Paediatrician.

The study found that in the last decade the number of sit-ups 10-year-old children can do has dropped by nearly 30 per cent, while children’s arm strength had fallen by about 25 percent.

Jane Sutherland, Irene Ouoba, Amara Anyogu and Elyn Xu from the Microbiology Research Unit had a busy week at the International Conference on Food Microbiology and Hygiene (ICFMH) FoodMicro 2010 at the Bella Centre, Copenhagen.  At a preliminary workshop on “Value-added processing of indigenous fermented food”, Irene gave a talk on interactions between African and European scientists and institutions, in which among other aspects, she highlighted the support provided by LondonMet for her developing research career.  Irene also gave a presentation on safety of traditional African alkaline fermented foods at the main conference.  Jane, Irene, Amara and Elyn each displayed posters of their research and Amara was one of seven finalists (from well over 100) considered for an award for the best student poster.  They were also delighted to meet again David Adimpong, a former LondonMet MSc (Food Science) student, who graduated with distinction in 2007 and is now engaged in research for an industrially-sponsored PhD at the University of Copenhagen.

Hamid Ghoddusi, however, responded to the call of more southerly climes and went to Cape Town for the International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST) World Congress in Cape Town, South Africa, where he presented a poster entitled “Selective Enumeration of Bifidobacteria in Dairy Products; A Comparative Study”.
