Weight Loss Clinic
Welcome to the Weight Loss Clinic of London Metropolitan University
The London Metropolitan Weight loss Clinic has been developed to support the local community in tackling the major health inequalities that are inherent in the poorer parts of inner cities. The Boroughs of Islington and Camden have a rich and diverse social and ethnic make up. With this diversity there is also increased obesity-related ill health. In the UK, around 50% of the adult population are classified as obese and overweight.
With the opening of our new £30million Science Centre, we are now in a position to offer a high quality service to the local community to help address the increasing prevalence of obesity. The basis of advice offered is centred on the principles of Healthy Eating, appropriate exercise and lifestyle modification.
Our ethos is to give participants the information and skills they need to help make lasting changes to their behaviour. The material covered includes: portion sizes, hidden calories, food labels, shopping strategies, hunger strategies, eating out, as well as cooking demonstrations. Additionally, the programme includes exercise classes specifically tailored to the needs, and ability, of participants.
The clinics are run by Dr David McCarthy, who is actively involved in obesity research, a Registered Dietitian and supported by experienced staff within the School of Human Sciences. The University's Dietetic students are also given the opportunity to become actively involved in the Weight Loss Clinic. This experience help them maintain and improve their clinical skills by working directly with clients.
