Research interests

My research with Dr Chris Chandler and Dr David Ball examines vulnerability factors to substance dependence. A series of studies have been conducted to examine how genetic variants, personality traits and responsiveness to substance-related stimuli can influence an individual’s propensity to a severe dependency on drugs. Our findings support the view that certain genes might predispose individuals toward a particular personality type, which in turn can act as a vulnerability factor to addiction and these particular genes can influence the extent to which an individual becomes sensitised to drugs and related environmental stimuli.

My second area of interest investigates issues surrounding teaching and learning in higher education and ultimately aims to support students to improve their academic performance. I contribute to various internal and external pedagogical research projects, including the Assessment Plus Project [http://www.writenow.ac.uk/assessmentplus], the CLaSS Project [http://www.uclan.ac.uk/CLaSSProject], the CETL Write Now Project [/depts/dops/writing-centre/writing-centre.cfm] and the Authorship project [http://www.writenow.ac.uk/student_authorship.html].

I have also enjoyed working in the area of pain management issues in sickle cell disease with Professor James Elander. This research looked at how pain-related and non-pain-related symptoms of substance dependence are associated with pain coping strategies and treatment for painful episodes in hospital. We conducted systematic assessments of concern-raising behaviours and associations with other factors, including DSM-IV symptoms of substance dependence. This research has considered the treatment of analgesic addiction amongst patients with painful chronic illnesses and staff-patient interactions that give rise to pseudo-addiction.
